Have you ever visited a place and felt immediately like you belong? Years ago I went to Austin Texas to visit a friend. I had images in my head of cowboys, country music and gun racks. I was only partly right.
Yes most pickups you see out there have a gun rack on the back but the people in this diverse town are from all over the globe. It is like walking into a very polite melting pot. Everyone is friendly and helpful.
I also had a preconceived notion that all you could eat here was barbecue. Now there is some of the best barbecue in the country in this city. The Salt Lick, a shack in the middle of nowhere, has hosted Presidents as well as locals and tourists. The mustard based sauce is out of this world. That said there are some incredible upscale restaurants here that will give a run for their money almost any restaurant across the globe.
For Irish cuisine as well as roasted duck in a cherry sauce, chateau briand and some of the finest wines in the world, head into the hill country to the Emerald restaurant. This family owned restaurant is a hidden gem. You feel like you are in a cottage in Ireland and the food is outstanding.
If you are nearer to the center of town try Uchi. This Japanese restaurant run by a former Iron chef will have you moaning with pleasure. The taste combinations that he creates is unheard of. I read the menu with caution and ended up ordering three times as much as I planned. This was the freshest sushi I have ever tasted. Now I will tell you this place is a bit pricey but it is worth every single penny and I would definitely make reservations if I was you.
If you are in the mood to try wild game, go for Hudson's on the Bend. The food combinations are creative and absolutely delicious. We are talking about deer, duck and antelope here so if you are a vegetarian take a pass but otherwise dive right in.
Now on to what to do in Austin. When you come to the outdoor music capital, there is something that you absolutely have to do and that is listen to some of the amazing music. Their clubs have every type of music imaginable. It is almost impossible to wander into a place that does not have an incredible band playing.
Or if music isn't your thing, you may want to go hang out with the bats. One of the largest populations lives right here in Austin Texas. During certain times of the year you can go to the bridge that they live under and wait to see them swarm. The sky literally turns black. Do not worry though. Bats are vegetarians and so have absolutely no interest in disturbing the tourists.
There are tons of other things to do in Austin and as you can tell it is a place like no others. Where else can you see goths, hippies and yuppies all hanging out together and having a great time.
